Thursday Thirteen

I have noticed in posts where I've mentioned things I do with Amazon's Alexa device that the comments frequently indicate people are unaware of what all one can do with an Alexa.

Alexa has "skills" that may be turned on or off. Some of them are pay or have small portions you can utilize unless you pay. I do not pay anything except for Amazon Prime, and you don't even need that to use Alexa.

I have Alexa Echo Dots and an Alexa Echo. They all work the same except the Echo has a better speaker, although frankly the Echo Dots have speakers that I would have envied when was I was 14 years old.

Here are a few things you can do with Alexa:

1. Ask her to dial a number and use her as a speaker phone. She will not answer calls unless you buy a separate device that allows her to do that. You can also make Alexa-device to Alexa-device calls, or use her as an intercom system (when my husband had his ankle surgery, we set an Echo Dot at his bed, and he would "make an announcement" and she'd call for me if I was in the back part of the house.)

2. She will greet you if you say, "Alexa, good morning," and offer up a little factoid about the day. (Today is International Country Music day, she says. And then I asked her to sing a country song and she sang one made up specifically for her called "It's Raining In the Cloud.")

3. She'll tell you the time and the weather.

4. She'll add, subtract, multiply, divide and figure out percentages (thank goodness for that last one!).

5. She will tell you jokes, puns, and riddles.

6. She'll sing you songs. These are made up specifically for Alexa. Some are country, some are rap, some are about S'Mores, some are about love, some are about life in "the cloud." She will also play music stations or music by decades, genre, or artist. Some of the music is not available, but a lot of it is. She also has access to iHeart radio.

7. She will tell you a short story, or recite poetry if you ask for specifics (for example, ask her for "Casey at the Bat," and you'll hear how there is no joy in Muddville). I like to listen to parts of Whitman's Leaves of Grass.

8. She will play games, like Jeopardy!, Song Quiz, 20 Questions (she is amazingly good at guessing these), and the Magic Door, which is an adventure game that requires you to remember specific items and perform certain verbal actions.

9. She will fart. For some reason she can't burp or belch, but she farts very well. This makes my husband laugh a lot.

9. She will play meditations or music for you and turn it off whenever you tell her. For example, I like to fall asleep listening to Bread. So I might say, "Alexa, play Bread." She'll say, "Shuffling songs by Bread," and then I tell her, "Stop playing in 20 minutes," and she'll say, "OK."

10. She will recite lines from Monty Python and the Holy Grail if you ask the right questions. (Ask her, "Alexa, what is your quest." or "Alexa, what is the air speed velocity of a swallow.")

11. She will do Star Trek noises. Ask her to beam you up and see what happens. You can also tell her to man the photon torpedoes and to fire them.

12. If you say, "Alexa, let's chat," you will be taken into the Alexa Prize, which is a contest for social bots. You will then be able to talk to one of the social bots that are in the contest, and you can have conversations about various things, mostly music, movies, or books. Some of the social bots are better than others. You can leave feedback at the end so that the developers will know what you liked or didn't like about the program.

13. Lastly, Alexa has a "custom" skill. In this skill, you create the question and answer. For example, if I ask Alexa, "Who's the best husband?" she will say that my husband is the best. Or he's the best farmer out of all the farmers in the world, because I programmed her to say that. The best use I have found for this particular skill is this: I say, "Alexa, I am depressed." I have programmed her to respond with my name, an acknowledgement of how I'm feeling, a reminder that it is temporary, and then a list of activities I can do immediately instead of sitting there feeling sorry for myself. She will suggest that I journal, read a book, take a walk, call a friend, or go to the grocery store, among other things. You could program her to offer suggestions for any situation that leaves you unhinged and have her offer up reminders that would make you feel better. (Example: Alexa, my mother just called. Alexa could say: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I know she makes you feel like you're a bad person. But you are a great person! If you are feeling sad, try reading a book, playing a video game, etc. - whatever would make you feel better.)

Alexa also keeps a to-do list, a shopping list, sets timers, does reminders, offers up recipes, gives health information, acts as my alarm clock, and will attempt to answer almost any question you ask. Sometimes the answer is, "I can't answer that," but at least she tried.

If you have an Alexa tip, leave it in the comments.

Thursday Thirteen

My blogging friend, The Gal, is participating in "The August Happiness Challenge." I have not been doing it daily, but it seems appropriate to finish out August with another list of 13 things that make me happy.

1. Female musicians. I love watching women rock and roll, or country and jam, even. Women like Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Dolly Parton, Chrissie Hynde, Pat Benatar, Cyndi Lauper, Adelle, Lady Gaga, and others make me smile. Keep playing, ladies!

2. Decaffeinated English Breakfast tea is my hot beverage of choice in the morning.

3. I bought a pencil sharpener that is much like the ones I used to use in school. I like to write with pencil and always have.

4. Lovely photos of cedar wax wings made me happy when I processed them. They came out well.

5. I have batteries on hand for the things that need them. This is a good thing.

6. We have a doe with twins running around the house. They are adorable.

7. My husband is reading books! This is exciting.

8. My exercise has picked up. I bought one of those "under the desk" bike pedaling things and have been using it.

9. The chiropractor today will put my back into place! Yay! I suspect this will help with many things.

10. We started eating low-sodium potato chips and they taste good.

11. I wrote a really bad poem yesterday. Sometimes the bad stuff has to be purged before I can get to the better words.

12. My brother sent me the trailer to the new Wonder Woman movie. I am still not sure when it is coming out, but eventually ! I will see this movie.

13. August is coming to a close. Schools have started in whatever manner the districts have determined is best for them. Autumn is nearing. I have always liked Spring and Fall the best.

Thursday Thirteen #670

My blogging friend, The Gal, is participating in "The August Happiness Challenge." So I thought I'd do another list of sorts for this Thursday 13.

1. Dr. Pepper, it turns out, is readily available in our area. This makes me happy because it makes my husband happy. Last week there were articles about a Dr. Pepper shortage, and he rose early and went to Food Lion to stock up. He found plenty. I don't drink it but I am happy for him that he found it.

2. Understanding that I am not at fault for every little thing that goes on around me makes a big difference in attitude.

3. My laryngitis is starting to clear up! I still sound gravelly but at least I am no longer croaking.

4. Pops asked me to help him out with some church work, and I obliged. Few people can sell my community to someone as well as I can.

5. Time seems to be measured differently these days. This is not a bad thing. I remember how amused Diana Prince was in the Wonder Woman movie when she saw Steve's watch. "You let that little thing tell you how to run your life?" she asked (paraphrasing). In the days of coronavirus and husband's retirement, time has taken on a different meaning. A better one, I think.

6. Running has never been my strong suit (I couldn't if I wanted to, probably), but I do like walking on the treadmill. I am working hard to get my heel spur under control so I can return to that. I've set up my own physical therapy routine that seems to be helping.

7. Until yesterday, I didn't realize how close we were to Autumn. I stood and watched the early morning sun shifting through the leaves and noticed the lack of green in them. The trees are readying themselves for colder days.

8. Monday, my husband fixed dinner. He can cook when he wants to and I'm urging him to do that more often. Not having to cook makes me very happy.

9. Pandemics have a way of changing society. I hope it makes ours better - as in, more loving, more kind, more "other" oriented and not so selfishly individualistic. We'll see. Fingers crossed.

10. Nobody gets me like my brother, and that is a good thing. I'm happy we are friends.

11. Ordinary items, like pencils, pens, paper, paperclips, notebooks, etc., make me happy. I normally buy a few extra notebooks in August, when the school supplies are out. Not this year, so I am happy that I have a stash.

12. Wonder, that is, a state of curiosity, is something I try to build. I like to be curious and find wonder in all sorts of things, from bugs to deer to birds and zoom lenses in cameras. The world is full of many lovely, beautiful things.

13. Focusing on the good is a positive, and I'm happy I am doing that today.

Thursday Thirteen

My blogging friend, The Gal, is participating in "The August Happiness Challenge." So I thought I'd make a list of 13 things that make me happy since it's August 13. (Actually that makes me happy, 13 on 13.)

It's the little things, sometimes.

1. Finding toilet paper at Sam's Club!

2. Holding my husband's hand before we go to sleep at night.

3. Seeing the chiropractor when I can during this pandemic.

4. Playing my guitar and learning a new song.

5. Figuring out a way around some of Google's stupid changes to Blogger and to its "G Suite."

6. Seeing the light in my husband's eyes Monday when he was lauded by his former coworkers.

7. Taking on a little project.

8. A new pair of sneakers.

9. A new coloring book!

10. "Ozium," which is found in the automotive section at my local Walmart and also at other auto stores. It is great for making perfume, cigarette, and similar odors go away, and it is anti-bacterial. It has a lemon scent that I can tolerate and it doesn't create build up on the tile floor in the kitchen like Lysol can.

11. The post office. I love the postal service and I am really sorry to see it under siege by the current administration.

12. Chocolate frozen yogurt, which at the moment is the only chocolate I'm allowing myself to have while I try to lose weight. (It isn't going well, but I'm giving it a go.)

13. Family and friends, even the ones who don't want to talk to me anymore.

Thursday Thirteen

Today, a little local history:

The county's first "fast food" joint, circa 1973.

The Cavalier Burger was one of Daleville's first "fast food" places. It started about 1972. The building is still there, but now it is a pet grooming facility. We always laughed about the "chicken shakes" you could purchase at the Cavalier Burger.

This is what Fincastle looked like before the trees all grew up, probably in the 1980s or earlier.

This is a barn floating down the James River during the Flood of 1985. The flood wiped out the communities of Eagle Rock and Cloverdale and the Town of Buchanan.

The second Botetourt County Courthouse, which burned in 1970.

The "old jail" structure and water tower beside the courthouse. The courthouse would be off to the right of the photo.

The county's first real strip mall, built approximately 1986. It was anchored by Winn-Dixie, which remained until about 1998 or so, and a Peoples Drug Store, which turned into something else and ultimately ended up a CVS. This mall still stands but it houses a Dollar General Market and few other small things.

The community of Eagle Rock, circa 1895. The town had several hotels and was a bustling area with mills and a tourist trade. President Grover Cleveland fished in the James River nearby.

The James River and Kanawha Canal was the brainchild of George Washington, who started it, sort of, but did not live to see it through. The canal was supposed to go all the way up the James and eventually connect with the Ohio River to the west. It ends in Eagle Rock. By the time the last lock was built, railroads were becoming the thing, and eventually the tow-path along the river was bought up and turned into a rail line.

The Roanoke Hollins Stockyard, circa 1970, has been around for about 60+ years.

The Breckinridge Mill is a reminder that long ago, local mills ground flour and such products came from local farms, not far away.

The City of Roanoke, known as Big Lick long before the railroad came, would never have become a prosperous railroad town if some Botetourt County folks hadn't had the initiative to encourage the railroad to "go that-away" instead of taking other routes.

The state bought out and removed the Truckstop at Exit 150 on Interstate 81 about 10 years ago. The truckstop started around 1962.  This picture was taken in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

This is a document signed by Patrick Henry. It and many like it, signed by other founders of Virginia and the United States, can be found in the Botetourt County Courthouse, where they are preserved, protected, and kept under lock and key by the county clerk.

Thursday Thirteen

Here are 13 books about writing. There are countless books on writing. These are some I have read.

1. Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert

2. Writing the Natural Way, by Gabriel Rico

3. The Writing Diet, by Julia Cameron

4. Writing Down the Bones, by Natalie Goldberg

5. Steering the Craft, by Ursula Le Guinn

6. On Writing Well, by William Zinsser

7. The Elements of Style, by Strunk & White

8. On Becoming a Novelist, by John Gardner

9. Bird by Bird, by Anne Lamott

10. If You Want to Write, by Brenda Ueland

11. The Widening Stream: The Seven Stages of Creativity, by David Ulrich

12. Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft, by Janet Burroway

13. The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, by Christopher Vogler

My favorites of these would be If You Want to Write, The Writing Diet, and Steering the Craft. But there are as many books out there telling a person how to write as there are ways to actually write a sentence.

There is no one right way to write. The only truism is that if you don't write, then you aren't writing. You can still be a writer and not write. You can live creatively and not write. But if you don't write, you aren't writing.

That's it. That's the most important thing.

Any books inspire you? Feel free to list them, I'm always looking for more to read.

Thursday Thirteen #665

Thirteen nature photos. Enjoy.

And because we can't forget what's really going on, here's a new song from The Chicks. Listen to it. Think about it. Wake up.

What the hell DID happen in Heliskinki?
