Saturday 9: I Don't Care

Saturday 9: I Don't Care (2019)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it
here.

1) This song begins with Ed Sheeran admitting he's not enjoying the party he's at. What's something you have to do this weekend, but don't want to do?

A. Cook a turkey. My husband decided that this should be the weekend we cook a turkey I bought on sale at Thanksgiving and stuck in the freezer. I'd intended to cook it Christmas but because I caught a respiratory thing I didn't fix it. Now it is thawing and must be cooked tomorrow.

2) Justin Bieber sings about trying to have a conversation at a party. Have you seen any of your social gatherings cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic?

A. My book clubs have been cancelled.

3) Both Ed and Justin conclude that this party -- and everything else -- is okay because they're with the ones they love. Who in your life always makes you feel comfortable and content?

A. Nobody ALWAYS does. Nor do I expect anyone to do so.

4) Ed and Justin have both appeared on The Simpsons. Are you a Simpsons fan?

A. I don't believe I have ever watched an entire episode.

5) Speaking of animation, Ed Sheeran has said that he'd love to do a Disney soundtrack, like Elton John's Lion King. Do you have a favorite Disney movie?

A. Now that Disney owns the Star Wars franchise, I guess it would be the original three Star Wars movies.

6) Justin Bieber is fluent in French, and Ed says he knows enough to get by. Say something to us in French.

A. Je pense que la réponse du gouvernement fédéral au virus est au mieux idiote. J’aspire à l’époque où les adultes étaient en charge.

7) Justin can solve a Rubik's Cube in less than two minutes. Are you good at puzzles?

A. Generally. I used to be able to solve a Rubik's Cube in less than two minutes but that was a long time ago. I doubt I could even solve it at the moment.

8) In 2019, the year this song was popular, 20 new governors took office. Tell us something about the governor of your state (or commonwealth)?

A. My governor is a physician and therefore I trust his judgment in dealing with a pandemic. He is not without flaws, but who is?

9) Random question: Did you more recently give a compliment, or receive one?

A. Gave one. I told my husband he was good at installing septic tanks and driving the backhoe. That is what he will be doing now that he has retired from the fire department.

Saturday 9: Easter Bunny Bop

Saturday 9: The Easter Bunny Bop (2015)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song encourages little ones to celebrate Easter by doing a little dance. Do you feel like dancing this morning?

A. Not really, no.

2) Everyone in this video is wearing bunny ears. Target, Amazon and other retailers sell bunny ear headbands sized for adults and priced at about $5. Will you be wearing bunny ears, or perhaps a more conventional chapeau, this weekend? Or, because of the corona virus, will your Easter attire be the same as any other day?

A. It will be the same as any other day.

3) This week's featured artists, The Bounce Patrol Kids, are a children's entertainment juggernaut: CDs, DVDs, downloads, and t-shirts. Additionally, they often update their YouTube channel because they want children the world over to have access to their upbeat, energetic songs for free. Besides the Bounce Patrol, what's the last YouTube video you watched?

A. I think it was a video on how to do stretches for plantar fasciitis.

4) According to Forbes magazine, the average American household spends $20.66 on candy each Easter. Will you be consuming candy this weekend?

A. Probably not Easter candy. No one will be out to purchase any.

5) The biggest chocolate Easter egg was made in Italy, measured 34 feet tall and weighed a staggering 15,000 lbs. Do you thinks it's possible to have too much chocolate?

A. I'm sure it is, but I have not yet hit my limit.

6) After chocolate, the top-selling Easter candy is Peeps Marshmallow Chicks. They're so popular that, in 2018, they were the subject of a Jeopardy clue. Do you often watch Jeopardy?

A. We watch it frequently, and play it on Alexa almost every night.

7) Jelly beans are also popular this time of year. In a 2019 poll, jelly bean fans responded that Jelly Belly Buttered Popcorn is their favorite flavor. Sam is crazy about cherry. Do you have a favorite?

A. I don't like jelly beans at all.

8) We've been talking a lot about sweets this morning. The only holiday that generates more candy sales is Halloween. When do you eat more candy: Easter or Halloween?

A. Probably Halloween. I used to really like Cadbury Eggs but they aren't as good as they used to be.

9) Easter is considered the season of rebirth. What makes you feel refreshed or rejuvenated?

A. A nap, a laugh with a friend, or a change of pace.

Saturday 9: Could've Been

Saturday 9: Could've Been (1987)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This wistful song is about a love affair that ended. What song reminds you of a long-ago love?

A. I can't think of one. "Longer Than," by Dan Folgerberg, is the song I share with my husband.

2) It was written by Lois Blaisch, a singer-songwriter who performs at clubs around Los Angeles and has sung outdoors at Disneyland. Would you prefer to attend a concert indoors, or outside under the stars?

A. Indoors, but only because of my allergies, and even indoors is bad because everyone wears perform or Axe deodorant.

3) This week's featured artist, Tiffany, appeared on the TV talent show Star Search when she was just 14. She came in second. Though she was disappointed, she admits she learned from it. She studied the singer who won and says it made her a better performer. Can you recall a time when you weathered a tough time and came through stronger?

A. When my husband I were attempting to have children, I went through many surgeries and a lot of agony and tears. It took years but in the end I think I am stronger for having suffered through all of that. However, it is not something I would wish on anyone.

4) Early in her career, she toured Alaska, opening for country legend George Jones. Have you ever visited our 50th state?

A. I have not.

5) Tiffany provided the voice of Judy Jetson in 1990's Jetsons: The Movie. Which cartoon did you enjoy more: the space-age Jetsons or the pre-historic Flintstones?

A. I like them both.

6) In 2007, she appeared on VH1's Celebrity Fit Club and lost 28 lbs. Are you making an effort to stay fit during this stay-at-home period?

A. Not exactly.

7) In 1987, when this song was popular, Aretha Franklin became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What's your favorite Aretha song?

A. RESPECT

8) Also in 1987, third-generation race car driver Marco Andretti was born. Are you a race fan?

A. My husband is a racing fan, which makes me one by default. He is more into NASCAR, though.

9) Random question: Do you find it easy to sit still, or are you fidgety?

A. It depends on what I'm doing. If I am reading a book, I can be very still. If I am trying to work on the bookkeeping for the farm or my writing business, I am fidgety because I don't like doing it.

Saturday 9: Somebody's Fool

Saturday 9: Everybody's Somebody's Fool (1960)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

None of this week's questions mention the corona virus. However, if you want to share how you're feeling about Covid-19 at this extraordinary time, please feel free to do so. You can share in the comments if you are so inclined. We need to support each other as best we can.

1) Next Wednesday is April Fool's Day. Do you have any pranks planned? Do you expect to fall victim to any April Fool's Day mischief?

A. No. I seldom do and this year things are so crazy we don't need any April Fool's mischief.

2) When she was a kid, Crazy Sam would fool her mom by putting bubble wrap under the bath mat so there would be a POP! when her mother stepped on it. When you encounter bubble wrap, do you always indulge in a pop or two?

A. Yes. It is rather hard to resist. That was pretty clever, putting it under the bath mat.

3) While we're using this song to celebrate April Fool's Day, it was written about another subject entirely: heartbreak. The lyrics tell us that at some point, we each get our hearts broken by someone who doesn't love us as much as we love them. Do you think that's true?

A. Yes. It doesn't have to be a lover, either. It can be a friend, parent, sibling, grandparent - pretty much anyone. Emotions wax and wane and I think most relationships have periods where one person is more loving or lovable than the other.

4) In 1962, this week's featured Connie Francis published a book aimed at teens called For Every Young Heart. It addressed topics like going steady and schoolwork vs. social life. Do you ever read advice columns or self-help books?

A. Yes. I read Dear Annie in the paper and I have read many self-help books over the years.

5) Connie Francis can play the accordion. Sam hasnever met anyone adept at this complicated instrument -- not even in her high school band. What about you? Do you play the accordion, or do you know anyone who can?

A. I have played the accordion though it was a long time ago. Apparently one of my friends has picked it back up and is sitting on her front porch relearning it during our physical distancing time.

6) In 1960, when this record was popular, Harper Lee's classic To Kill a Mockingbird was published. Have you read it?

A. Yes.

7) Also in 1960, one of Life magazine's best-selling issues had Sophia Loren on the cover. At that time, she was an international film star and considered one of the world's most beautiful women. Who do you consider one of 2020's most beautiful women?

A. I have absolutely no idea. I'll go with Gal Gadot because she plays Wonder Woman and the second movie is supposed to come out in June. I suppose that will depend upon whether or not the theaters are open by then.

8) A 1960 issue of Vogue acknowledged how expensive it had become to maintain a fashionable wardrobe and asked, "If you were to buy only one thing, what would it be?" If it's good enough for Vogue, it's good enough for Saturday 9: If you could purchase only one new article of clothing for spring 2020, what would you buy?

A. A really good pair of sneakers.

9) Random question: When someone makes you really angry, are you more likely to respond with stony silence or a big noise?

A. I tend initially to be silent but then have a long build up and explode, leaving the subject of my ire wondering what the heck happened because he or she is clueless.

Saturday 9: Complete Symphonies

Saturday 9: Complete Symphonies (2019)

This week we're classing up the joint with a well-received box-set by the Danish Chamber Orchestra. You can listen to the orchestra here.

1) Beethoven is one of classical music's best known composers. Do you often listen to classical music?

A. I do on occasion. I wouldn't call it "often."

2) Though a musical genius, Beethoven never learned to multiply or divide. When faced with a simple arithmetic problem, do you do it in your head? Or do you rely on the calculator in your phone or on your computer?

A. It depends on the problem. Simple arithmetic I can do in my head. Nowadays, I just yell out to Alexa and she solves it for me.

3) Beethoven bathed often, which was considered "quirky" for a man of his time. (Understandable, since you had the heat the water, haul it to the tub, and then empty the tub bucket by bucket when you were done.) Do you bathe in the morning or in the evening?

A. Both. I take a long shower in the morning and quick "rinse" in the evening. I have reasons for this. If I don't shower in the morning I look like hell and if I don't shower at night I wake up sick from going to bed with dust and allergens in my hair.

4) Adam Fischer conducts the Danish Chamber Orchestra for this 5-disc set. He began his musical career young, when he sang in the children's choir of Budapest's National Opera House. Have you ever sung in a choir or chorus?

A. I played in a rock band. I was in the chorus in the 7th and 8th grades.

5) Mr. Fischer was awarded the Gold Medal of Arts from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Tell us about a prize or award you have received. (Yes, that ribbon you earned for penmanship in second grade counts.)

A. In the second grade, I won second place for a drawing I made about littering. I used a stick person and showed him/her/it tossing trash in the can. I made it "3D" by wadding up a bit of tissue for the trash and cutting a toilet paper tube in half to create a trash can. I won $5 for it and they paid me with a check, which I signed upside down and my mother got angry because I didn't know where to sign a check. I was 7. What the hell did she expect?

6) The Danish Chamber Orchestra is beloved in Demark. When, in 2014, the Danish Broadcasting Company announced it would no longer fund the Orchestra, citizens began a crowdfunding campaign and raised more than $1,000,000 to keep the music playing. Have you ever contributed to a crowdfunding platform, like GoFundMe, Kickstarter or FundRazr?

A. I gave to a GoFundMe once and felt taken afterwards, so I won't do that again.

7) The Orchestra's "home" is the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music in Copenhagen. Where were you when you last heard music played live?

A. I was at the Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount, VA. I was listening to Tommy Emmanuel play guitar. Check him out here.

8) In 2019, when this boxed set was released, China became the first nation to land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. Are you fascinated by stories about space?

A. I love stories about space. I check out the NASA site a lot, I look for the International Space Station when it flies overhead, and I go outside and watch meteor showers.

9) Random question: Tell us about your week. These are extraordinary times, and it might feel good to share.
A.  My county had its first confirmed case of Covid-19 yesterday, and today there was another run on the grocery stores locally. Having it so close makes it more real, I suppose. Mostly I have been home and I have been sick with some kind of something, but I've not run a fever. I think it is allergies. I did not go to my doctor but I emailed her so she is aware. I am going to go rest after I finish writing this. I also resolved Friday that I will not listen to someone who constantly demeans the media as journalists do their best to keep the public properly informed in demanding times.

Saturday 9: I'll Take You Home Again

Saturday 9: I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen (1975)

(Chosen because St. Patrick's Day is Tuesday.)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) This week's song is widely considered a traditional Irish ballad. Are you of Irish descent?

A. I always thought I was on my father's side, but my brother took one of those DNA tests, and it came back 53% Great Britain and only l3% Irish/Scotland/Wales. So I'm a little Irish but apparently more British.

2) It's a song from a groom to his homesick bride. Who did you most recently serenade? (Yes, "Happy Birthday" counts.)

A. My husband listened to me singing while I was practicing my guitar.

3) Kathleen considers "home" her mother's cottage. How about you? Is "home" where you live now, or is it where you grew up?

A. Home is where I live now.

4) St. Patrick is credited with driving snakes out of Ireland, and to this day the Irish report there are no snakes on their land. Ophiophobia is the fear of snakes. Do you suffer from ophiophobia?

A. Yes, and the darned things are already out crawling around. My mother-in-law ran over one with the car the other day. She ran over it 7 times.

5) Irish Americans held the first St. Patrick's Day parade on our shores in New York City in 1766. Does your town host a St. Patrick's Day parade?

A. The parade has been cancelled due to the Corona virus, but yes, the nearest city has a St. Patrick's Day parade.

6) Leprechauns are a symbol of St. Patrick's Day. These small Irish fairies are said to live in the forest, guarding their gold. Do you more often wear silver or gold?

A. I lean toward white gold or silver.

7) The signature color of St. Patrick's Day is green. Will you wear green next Tuesday?

A. If I remember.

8) This week's featured artist, Elvis, was the idol of millions. But not the Songfellows. In the early 1950s, a young Elvis auditioned for this gospel group and they refused him. Just as well, as the King of Rock 'n Roll did rather well for himself as a solo. Like Elvis, did you ever interview for a job that you didn't get?

A. Yes, several times. Once I interviewed for some kind of advertising position, I can't remember exactly what now since it was about 35 years ago. I'd typed my resume on a typewriter because we didn't have word processors then. Near the end of my resume, there was a typographical error I'd missed. The company managers called me in for an interview but then said they couldn't understand how I could be so credentialed but have this typo. I didn't know what to say, so I said something really stupid. I said, "I leave it there to see if prospective employers catch it, because I don't want to work for people who can't see the error." Or something along those lines. I did not get the job. I'm not sure what would have been a better answer. Maybe just admitting I was in a hurry?

9) Random question: Do you believe women are more emotional than men?

A. After the travesties we've seen with the politicians weeping and gnashing their teeth in recent years, crying because they felt they were entitled to be a Supreme Court Justice or sobbing because people are so mean to their beloved president? Hell no. Men are whiny little babies.

Saturday 9: Bye, Bye Blackbird

Saturday 9: Bye, Bye Blackbird (1957)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Julie London complains about all the "hard luck stories" people are handing her. Did you more recently listen to someone else's problems, or share your own?

A. I think it was a mutual whine session.

2) She promises to arrive "late tonight." What time do you think is too late to drop in on someone?

A. I don't generally drop in on people, but I wouldn't drop in on anyone after 7:30 p.m.

3) Julie's nickname was "The Liberty Girl" because she was Liberty Records' first successful artist. The second was singer-songwriter David Seville, who had a couple novelty hits as "The Chipmunks." There were three singing chipmunks. Without looking it up, can you name them?

A. Alvin . . . and two others.

4) Julie's love of music was shared by her mother. When Julie was a little girl, mother and daughter would listen to Billie Holiday records together. What recordings did you enjoy when you were very young?

A. My parents listened to country music, so I grew up listening to Dolly Parton, Elvis, and Johnny Cash. My brother and I also had children's albums we liked. We had a Disney one that had the song "So Dear to My Heart" on it - maybe that was the name of the album, I don't remember. It had a song "Lavender Blue, Dilly Dilly, Lavender Green, when you are queen, Dilly Dilly, I'll be your king."

5) She began modeling when she 17. Julie was working as an elevator operator when a talent agent saw her and decided she would photograph well. With the advent of push-button elevators, elevator operator is a job that doesn't exist anymore. Can you think of another job that was once common but now is rare (or non-existent)?

A. Telephone operator. Stenographer. Copy editor.

6) Julie recorded more than 30 albums and was named "most popular female vocalist" by Billboard magazine in 1956. If you could see any entertainer -- male or female -- in concert, who would you choose?

A. I have no idea. I'm going to a Melissa Etheridge concert in late April.

7) She appeared in Westerns on both TV and in the movies. Have you ever dreamed of being a cowboy/cowgirl?

A. No, I can't say that appealed to me.

8) For six seasons, Julie played Dixie McCall R.N. on the show Emergency! The series was about Los Angeles paramedics and firefighters. Do you often hear sirens in your neighborhood?

A. No. I live in a rural area. If you hear sirens around here, you look up and watch. I loved that show, by the way, and I remember the nurse Dixie.

9) Random question: You're pulled over for speeding. Do you think you'd have an easier time talking your way out of it if the officer was a man . . . or a woman?

A. I think a man, but I doubt I'd be successful with either of them.

Saturday 9: On the Radio

Saturday 9: On the Radio

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The action begins when a letter falls out of the pocket of a brown overcoat. What color is your coat?

A. Black

2) The lyrics ask if it "kinda strikes you sad when you hear our song." We don't want to be sad this Saturday, so we're asking what song makes you happy.

A. Uptown Funk.

3) Right before this song hit the charts, Donna Summer hit the cover of Newsweek. Are there any magazines in your home now? If yes, who is on the cover?

A. There's an AARP magazine that just came in the mail. It has Shania Twain on the cover. Apparently she's now AARP old.

4) Donna wrote the lyrics to this song, while producer Giorgio Moroder wrote the tune. Moroder is known as "the father of disco." Is disco a genre you enjoy?

A. Yes. I love disco. I always have.

5) This song got additional airplay throughout the 1980s because the game show The Price Is Right played it every time a contestant won a stereo. Today, the most popular audio equipment sold at Best Buy is a sound bar to improve the quality of TV audio. Have you added a sound bar or sound system to your TV?

A. We have a sound system that is at least 15 years old hooked up to our TV.

6) Moroder has won two Academy Awards for Best Song. The first was for "Flashdance . . . What a Feeling" from Flashdance and the second was for "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun. Do you  have a favorite movie soundtrack?

A. I own the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, and I listen to them when I'm in the mood, but the one I think would be the best to own would be the soundtrack from Forrest Gump.

7) He grew up in Ortsei, Italy. Located in Northern Italy, the Ortsei economy is fueled by tourists who ski in winter, hike in summer and shop for woodcarvings all year around. Do out-of-towners find their way to your hometown more often in summer or winter?

A. More often in the summer.

8) Kourtney Kardashian was born in 1979, the year this record was a hit. Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been on since 2007. Have you ever seen it?

A. I have never watched an episode. Nor will I.

9) Random question -- When getting dressed in the morning, what's the second item of clothing you put on?

A. My underwear.

Saturday 9: Buttons & Bows

Saturday 9: Buttons & Bows

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Here it here.

1) The lyrics extol the beauty of "rings and things and buttons and bows." When you're getting dressed, do you give much thought to accessorizing?

A. Not really. I wear my wedding band and alternate between a couple of pairs of earrings. I sometimes wear a pearl necklace or a silver necklace.

2) Dinah Shore sings that she doesn't want to live where the cactus hurts her toes. Sam can sympathize, as she has a blister on one of her toes from where her winter boots rub. Do you have any aches and pains to report this morning?

A. Yes. I have done something to my elbow. I think it is tennis elbow although I don't play tennis. It is probably from using the computer.

3) Dinah was such a popular entertainer that people were surprised to learn she earned a degree in sociology from Vanderbilt University. What is something we'd be surprised to know about you?

A. It took me eight years to obtain my bachelor's degree. I think I've mentioned that before, though. Hmm. Oh, I know. I play the harmonica a little bit. But maybe that's not a surprise since I play other musical instruments. Hmm. How about this: I prefer silver to gold.

4) Dinah's was the best selling version of this song, which was introduced by Bob Hope in the movie The Paleface. Hope had success early in his career as a song-and-dance man on Broadway. Are you better at telling jokes, singing, or dancing?

A. I am not very good at any of the three, really. I can sing a passable tune, so I will go with that one.

5) Both Bob and Dinah donated their time to entertaining the troops in WWII. It was during a USO tour that Dinah met and fell in love with actor George Montgomery, who was serving in the Air Force. They were married for 20 years and had two children. Their daughter followed her parents into show business and became an actress. If a young person asked you for career advice, what would you tell them?

A. Don't go into journalism.

6) Dinah was an avid golfer and even sponsored an LPGA tournament. She was also an excellent cook who hosted TV cooking segments. Which would you find more relaxing -- an afternoon on the golf course or in the kitchen?

A. How about I sit in the golf club house and drink a soda and read a book while someone serves me lunch?

7) In 1948, the year this record was a hit, Scrabble was introduced. Do you prefer word games, card games, board games or jigsaw puzzles?

A. I like them all. I am not sure I have a preference.

8) Also in 1948, LPs (33 1/3 rpm records) were introduced. Do you have any vinyl records in your home?

A. Yes. My husband and I both brought our collections with us when we married, and we have never rid ourselves of them even though we have nothing to play them on. Maybe a record player should be on the Christmas list this year.

9) Random question -- Which of these would you consider the greatest insult: to be called boring, untrustworthy, or stupid?

A. Untrustworthy. I'm sure a lot of people think I'm boring and I imagine a great many people think I am stupid, as well. But I hope no one thinks I am untrustworthy.

Saturday 9: Secret Valentine

Saturday 9: Secret Valentine (2008)

In honor of Valentine's Day. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics talk about a song that's so romantic it "turns out the lights." Are the lights on in the room you're in right now?

A. Yes, even though it is daylight outside. I need a lot of light to see by these days. I used to read practically in the dark and kept the lights off all the time - my husband thought I was part vampire. But as I have aged, I find I need more light.

2) In the video, our heroine's Valentine's Day adventure begins with a note slipped into her pocket. What's in your pocket right now?

A. Lint.

3) This week's band, We the Kings, are proud sons of the state of Florida. Bradenton, to be exact. They even called one of their CDs Sunshine State of Mind. Have you ever been to Florida? If so, where have you visited?

A. I went to Florida as a child to visit a great-grandparent, but I have no idea where in Florida that was. I was quite young and the only thing I remember about the trip is a long drive, a cat had a litter of kittens underneath a porch while we were there, and palm trees. In 1993, my husband and I went to Disney in Orlando for a few days to celebrate my graduation from college.

4) Lead singer Travis Clark has a pierced lip but doesn't always wear a lip ring. Do you have any piercings? If yes, are you wearing jewelry in your piercing(s) right now?

A. I have a hole in each ear but I don't have on any earrings at the moment.

5) The band's name comes from a cheer they did when they attended Martha B. King High School. Have you attended your high school reunion?

A. I attended our 30th high school reunion in 2011.

6) Hearts are the symbol of Valentine's Day, so here's a little heart trivia: whales have largest heart of any animal. When we say a person is "big hearted," it means we think of them as generous. Think about the people in your life. Who would you describe as big hearted?

A. My husband, some of my friends, my brother when he wants to be.

7) It's estimated that 9 million people buy Valentine's Day presents for their dogs and cats. Have you ever purchased a holiday gift for a pet?

A. No.

8) Valentines to teachers are also big sellers. Did you ever have a crush on one of your instructors?

A. When I was in school, all the girls swooned over Barry Kinzie, who taught 5th grade, I think. But I did not have him as a teacher. I was almost always the teachers' pet in class; I think I loved all of my teachers but not as a "crush." They were nice people who took an interest in me.

9) With the popularity of e-cards, fewer Valentine messages are sent via the USPS. What's the most recent thing you dropped into a mailbox?

A. I mailed off a batch of the county's 250th magazine to several folks who'd asked me for copies.

Saturday 9: Two Divided

Saturday 9: Two Divided by Love (1971)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? You can hear it here.

1) Sam's teacher told her she'd use math every day. What's the last math problem you solved? (Did you add to/subtract from the balance of your checkbook ... use division to figure out how much you'd save with 25% off that sweater …)

A. I think it was to calculate a tip on at a restaurant bill. I do it this way for 15%. The bill is $25.75. Ten percent of that is $2.57. Half of that is 1.25 or so. Add those together to get $3.75, which I round up to $4. Yes, I know, those are not exact numbers but they are close. If I wanted to leave 20%, then I'd double the $2.57 to $5.

2) The lyrics tell us that if you take away the rain from a flower, the flower just won't grow. Do you have any indoor houseplants? Could they use a drink of water this morning?

A. I have one cactus out in the garage. Someone gave it to me last year and it is still alive even though I planted it in what was mostly mulch and not dirt. Occasionally I give it a bit of water. It's a cactus. It doesn't need much.

3) This week's artists, The Grass Roots, are introduced in this video by country music superstar Kenny Rogers. Who is your favorite country music singer?

A. I don't listen to country music now. I stopped when I discovered I could turn the channel on the radio to a pop music station. I liked Dolly Parton back in the day, though. I also like Ann Murray. I still listen to some of her music on a CD.

4) The two unmarried members of the group -- guitarist Warren Entner and drummer Ricky Coonce -- competed for a lady's affection on a 1968 episode of The Dating Game. Neither of them won! She chose Bachelor #1. Anyway, have you ever appeared on a game show? Do you know anyone who has?

A. I have never appeared on game show. I know some people who appeared on the local version of Classroom Quiz, but by the time I hit high school, that show was over.

5) The Grass Roots were originally called The 13th Floor. They chose this cheeky name because many high rises do not have a 13th floor since 13 is considered an unlucky number, and they were thumbing their noses at superstition. Are you superstitious?

A. I think the weather affects you with headaches and I do think the full moon makes people a little more weird sometimes, but I think there are scientific explanations for that, some of which we simply haven't figured out yet. However, I do not venture out of the house unless I have to on Friday the 13th. I have had three car wrecks and every one of them occurred on a Friday the 13th.

6) At the time of his death in 2011, group leader Rob Grill was still playing music, touring with a reconfigured Grass Roots. His widow Nancy referred to him as "one lucky son of a gun" because he'd been able to support himself as a musician, doing what he loved for 45 years. In what ways do you consider yourself fortunate?

A. I married a nice man and I was able to have a career as a freelance writer. Most writers cannot support themselves with their writing and I was able to for a good while. I don't now because of health issues, but at one time I did okay. I never got rich or anything but I was able to pay my share of the bills.

7) In 1971, the year this song was released, Walt Disney World opened in Florida. The Epcot Center was added in 1982. Have you ever visited this, or any, Disney theme park?

A. We went to Disney in Florida in 1993 to celebrate my graduation from Hollins College (now Hollins University). We went in June and it was incredibly hot and humid (I think it was like 107 or something). We could only stay until about lunchtime and then we had to return to the hotel and get out of the heat. I turned 30 while we were there. (It took me 8 years to get my degree because of health issues.)

8) Fresh chicken was just 43¢/lb. in 1971. Do you prefer the breast or drumstick?

A. I prefer the thigh, actually.

9) Random question: Do you work well under pressure?

A. I wrote for newspapers and magazines for 20 years, so I must. Nothing like a weekly deadline to keep you writing.

Saturday 9: Waiting All Day

Saturday 9: Waiting All Day for Sunday Night (2012)

Happy February! White Rabbits!

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This week's Saturday 9 has a football theme because there's a big game Sunday. Will you be watching?

A. I doubt it. Sunday night is Supergirl night. This girl has her priorities.

2) The Super Bowl is a big day for food consumption in the US, second only to Thanksgiving. What's on your menu this weekend?

A. Nothing in particular.

3) The NFL has decreed that the Super Bowl will never be played in a city that has a median February temperature of less than 50º. Would your hometown qualify for the Big Game?

A. I don't think so. We have a temperature range usually from below freezing to 45 degrees in February, although this year it could be like June since January was like March.

4) This version of the NFL theme song mentions the Steelers and the Broncos. During the regular season, which team do you root for? How did they do in 2019?

A. I don't generally watch football. I do root for the Virginia Cavaliers (University of Virginia) in college football.

5) This version of the Sunday Night Football song is by Faith Hill. She also has ties to the MLB, since her husband is Tim McGraw, son of the Mets' pitcher Tug McGraw. Which sport do you prefer -- baseball or football?

A. Neither. Baseball is boring and football is violent.

6) Faith has performed live at more than one The Super Bowl in the past, performing both "America, the Beautiful" and "The Star Spangled Banner." What's your favorite patriotic song?

A. America the Beautiful.

7) She has a perfume line with Coty that was a big seller at CVS during Christmas 2018. What's the last item you bought at a drugstore?

A. Bandages for my husband's ankle incision, which is healed but still tender where his specialized walking boot cuts across it.

8) Faith Hill is the producer of a talk show on CMT called Pickler and Ben. Is the TV on as you answer these questions? If so, what are you watching?

A. My TV is off because my husband is napping while I answer these questions.

9) Random question: You've got a chip in your hand and three dips to choose from -- guacamole, salsa, and onion. Where does your chip get dipped?

A. Onion.

Saturday 9: Go Where Baby Lives

Saturday 9: Go Where Baby Lives (1957)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics tell us that the girl of his dreams lives up on a hill. Is there a hill near your home? Or is the terrain pretty flat where you are?

A. I live on a hill. I am surrounded by hills and the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

2) Another clue to her whereabouts is that she's about a mile from town. Will you be staying close to home this weekend, or will you be traveling a mile or more?

A. I don't expect to leave the house. We're expecting icy weather and I don't care to be out in it.

3) Sam admits she's crazy about the sax solo. Is there a particular musical instrument that you love to listen to?

A. I love to listen to guitar and/or piano music.

4) This is the only record The Strollers made for States, a company based out of Chicago. States was only in existence for five years (1952-57) and this was the 63rd or 64 records released before they went out of business. Tell us about a business in your neighborhood that recently closed their doors.

A. Ballast Point is still making beer, but in September or thereabouts they closed the front restaurant that was much ballyhooed when it opened as being the best thing to ever happen. The national brand also was sold and no one is quite sure what is going to happen to the brewery in our nearby industrial park.

5) More than 60 years after its initial release, this song enjoyed new popularity when Xfinity used it in commercials for their wifi. What company is your internet service provider? Are you happy with it?

A. My service provider is my local telephone company. I cannot get high speed and only have DSL. My area is too rural for other service, the company says. Not enough people to make it worth running the fiber optic lines down this way.

6) In researching this week's song, Sam googled "strollers" and was surprised to discover how many different types of baby buggies are available today. When did you most recently push a child in a stroller?

A. Gosh, I don't know. Fifty years?

7) In 1957, the year this song was released, President Eisenhower celebrated his second inaugural with a parade featuring more than 50 marching bands. The mercury never quite reached 45º that day. How's the weather outside your front door?

A. It is foggy and rainy. A little colder and we will have ice to content with.

8) One of the best-selling books of 1957 was Peyton Place. This steamy saga of small town life launched two films, two television series, and several made-for-tv movies. Is there a book that you enjoyed that was successfully turned to a movie?

A. The Lord of the Rings. (Bet you didn't see that one coming.) I also thought the 1994 movie version of Little Women was very good.

9) A Peyton Place-inspired question: Can a man be physically unfaithful to a woman, but still love her?

A. Oh, philosophy! Wow. I am no man, so I can only guess at this question, but I suspect he can be unfaithful and yet still love the woman. The better question is will the woman continue to love the unfaithful lover?

Saturday 9: Miss Independent

Saturday 9: Miss Independent (2003)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it
here.

Until a few weeks ago when I heard this on the radio and saw it scrolling saying it was a Kelly Clarkson song, I'd have sworn this was an 1990s Sheryl Crow song. Oh well.

1) The song begins with Kelly describing a woman who is "independent" and "self-sufficient." Are you feeling especially independent and self-sufficient this morning? Or is there a particular task on your to-do list that you wish you had help with?

A. I'm feeling tired and worn out. I wish I had a bookkeeper to keep our books because I hate doing the bookkeeping for our several businesses. I need to finish up 2019 so we can get the taxes to the accountant.

2) Kelly especially enjoys that this song was a hit, because she had to argue with the record company to even include it on her album. Tell us about a time you're glad fought to get your way.

A. It wasn't a fight, but I am glad I insisted on going to Hollins College (now Hollins University) to obtain my BA (and later my MA in 2012).

3) The video depicts a very lively party that spills from the house to the pool area. What's the last party you attended? Was it held indoors, outdoors, or did the revelers enjoy themselves both inside and outside?

A. I guess the last party I attended was the little shindig we hosted for my nephew and his bride. It was indoors, mostly, and hopefully most everyone enjoyed themselves.

4) The partiers are playing with "silly string." Have you ever indulged in a "silly string" battle?

A. I can't say that I have.

5) Kelly Clarkson has a new daytime talk show. Who hosted the last entertainment talk show (as opposed to news) that you watched?

A. Bill Maher last night.

6) Kelly Clarkson told a foodie website that one of her favorite foods is sushi (especially California rolls). She said she's surprised how fond she is of it, since as a kid, sushi is a food she wouldn't even try. Tell us about something you had to be convinced to try, or do, that you were surprised to find you enjoyed.

A. It took a while for me to decide to try coloring, but once I started it I found it quite relaxing and I'm actually pretty good at it.

7) In 2003, when "Miss Independent" was released, Microsoft and Sony were furiously competing for gamers' attention. Do you own Playstation or Xbox, neither or both?

A. Neither. I used to have an Xbox but it was the first version and long out of date. I got rid of it some time ago and never replaced it. There are enough time-wasters on my cellphone now to make up for that.

8) Also in 2003, the best-selling cookbook was The King Arthur Flour Baker's Companion. It features foolproof recipes for old favorites like waffles, pancakes, flat breads and crackers. When you look for a new recipe, are you searching for an easier/better way to make something familiar, or are you more likely looking to try something new?

A. Usually for something new, or some way to make something like chicken a little differently. Fixing meals and eating has become problematic. Hey, I could use a chef in response to one of the earlier questions.

9) Random question: Which has gotten you in more trouble -- love or money?

A. Probably love.
