Crazy to Sane

Q. What is your favorite possession?

A. My desktop computer. It is where I spend most of my time, and it is a metaphorical highway to knowledge, social interaction, and entertainment. Following that would be my Toyota Camry, which takes me to the real-life highway so that I might find knowledge, social interaction, and entertainment.

Q. Do you like to read? If so, which books do you love best?

A. I love to read! I don't really have a favorite book, as I am an eclectic reader. I enjoy high fantasy, literary works, mysteries, and chick lit. I have been known to read series books from TV shows, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Xena: Warrior Princess. I also like to read nonfiction, including biographies, autobiographies, and self-help.

Q. Do you have any pets?

A. I have a herd of cows. I have birds and deer outside the window. But no dogs, cats, fish, or hamsters. I had a dog but she died in 2001 and I never felt moved to have another.

Q. What was your favorite food as a child? Is it the same now?

A. Cucumbers. I loved cucumbers in vinegar when I was a little girl. I still like them but they do not agree with me so much any more.

Q. What is your favorite thing about blogging?

A. Self-expression without worry, followed by my interaction with my readers. I have made friends through blogging and I appreciate every pair of eyes that turns this way.

Q. If you could live anywhere, where would it be?

A. I like where I am now, but would not mind living on the outskirts of a college town where I could access a major university.

Q. What is your favorite number?

A. Eight (8).

Q. Which of these things would you find hardest to give up for a year? Chocolate, reading, coffee or smoking?

A. Reading, definitely. I don't drink coffee or smoke, and I once gave up chocolate for 10 years (should have never started eating it again). But I have never given up reading, and can't see that I ever would.

Q. If you could make your life into a movie, what would you name it.. and who would you want to play you?

A. "Crazy to Sane," starring Sandra Bullock.

Q. If you had $20,000 for a shopping spree, what would you buy?

A. I'd replace the tub in the master bathroom with a walk-in shower, and spend whatever is left on updating the kitchen.

Q. If you could eat lunch with one famous person, who would it be?
A. Living or dead? If living, J. K. Rowling. If dead, Eleanor Roosevelt.

A Partridge In a Pear Tree

A short meme from Sunday Stealing today!

1. Where was your profile picture taken?

A. The one on my blog was taken outside of my house. The one of myself on Facebook was taken last year during the Open Studios event in Botetourt County. I was visiting an artist friend and a student from Hollins University took the photo for me.

2. Name someone who made you laugh today.

A. Um. It is 6:50 a.m. A little early for that! But actually my husband and I have already shared a laugh; he told me to stop trying to think because I wasn't awake yet!

3. Do you believe exes can be friends?

A. I would hope so.

4. How do you feel about Dr Pepper?

A. I used to drink it by the gallon, but I gave up soft drinks about 20 years ago. My husband still drinks Diet Dr. Pepper. I drank Dr. Pepper because I was proud I was part of an original crowd! (That's from an old Dr. Pepper commercial, for you young whippersnappers.)

5. Who was the last person you took a picture of?

A. A guy who makes crepes.

6. Are you upset about anything?

A. I have a headache, which I would prefer not to have, but I am not upset about it. I'm pretty happy at the moment.

7. Do you think relationships are ever really worth it?

A. Every single one is worth it.

8. Are you a bad influence?

A. Not any more. :-)

9. Night out or night in?

A. Night in. Snuggled up watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (at this time of year).

10. Has anyone ever called you perfect before?

A. Yes. Well, more like a perfectionist, to be perfectly accurate about it.

11. What song is stuck in your head?

A. The 12 days of Christmas. I began singing it when I woke up.

12. Someone knocks on your window at 2:00 a.m., who do you want it to be?

A. Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, asking me to set out on a great adventure with him. I want to see dragons.

13. Do you smile a lot?

A. I think so. My parents paid a lot for that smile, might as well show it off!

88 Questions Part 4

I stole this from Sunday Stealing. It's actually 88 questions, which I am chopping up into 22 at a time. Thankfully, this is the fourth and final part.

67. Has anyone put their arms around you in the past 5 days?

A. Yes.

68. Do you miss the way things used to be?

A. Sometimes.

69. Song you're thinking of right now?

A. Um. I wasn't. But let's see. How about Vincent (Starry Starry Night) by Don McLean. It is one of my favorites.

70. Want someone back in your life?

A. Can't think of anyone. If they're not in my life now, it's for a reason.

71. Will tomorrow be better than today?

A. I always hope that it is.

72. What's the color of the underwear you are wearing?

A. That's rather personal, isn't it?

73. Who was the first best friend that you ever had?

74. How do you react when someone disappoints you?

A. Depending upon the disappointment, I might become sad (even cry) or I might just shrug it off.

75. Is there anyone who understands your sexuality?

A. Pretty much every heterosexual woman would, I would guess. What a weird question.

76. Are you a naturally happy person? Or is your happiness forced?

A. I am not a naturally happy person. I work at it, which is not the same as forcing it.

77. Is there anyone you wish would fall in love with you?

A. Well, a multi-millionaire who would die in a few days after rewriting his will to leave me his mass fortune would be nice, but I don't expect that to happen.

A. A nightgown that I bought at Walmart. Made by cheap labor in some foreign country, I'm sure, and I should be ashamed of myself for making that purchase.

79. Are you obsessed with something right now?

A. Yes. Getting these questions answered and over with.

80. The first person you loved is?

A. I have loved a lot of people, but I would guess my brother in a sisterly fashion, and then my husband, though I also love my friends in that friendly sort of way.

81. Something terrible happened with you?

A. With me? With me? What, is this the bad grammar meme? Do you mean did something terrible happen to me? Look up the word "with" and tell me how does that apply to this sentence? Did something terrible accompany me? Because of me? From me? Against me? What in the world are you asking?

82. You are locked up with your celebrity crush for days, what happens?

A. I don't really have a celebrity crush, so I will have to think about this. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Okay. We'll go with George Clooney, and by the time the doors open he will run screaming into the jungle, never to be seen again.

83. If you could wish something, what would it be?

A. I would wish for civility on the Internet. That would create a huge chain of events that might ulimately bring about world peace.

84. Ever try to force someone to do something?

A. Yes.

85. When you are alone, what do you think about?

A. Everything. My brain whirrs constantly.

86. How was your first sex?

A. Too personal a question for me to answer.

87. What's your favorite music genre?

A. Pop, pop, pop music. American Top 40.

88. Are you happy I only wrote 88 questions?
A. Yes, very.

And Now For Something Completely Different

I do not often do memes - you know, those question and answer things. I don't see them as much as I used to. But today, having apparently once again run out of things to say, I went in search of one. I found this one from 2009 at this link, and decided I would answer these questions.

1. How old do you look?

About 10 years younger than I am. I have noticed new lines, however, so I don't expect that to continue. Age is catching up.

2. Where do you live?

I live on a farm outside of a small town in a little corner of heaven.

3. Are you waiting for something?

Yes, yes I am. I am waiting for the sun to rise, the moon to shine, the stars to twinkle, and for day to break.

4. What’s one pet peeve of yours that is not common?

Alas, that would be the constant use of poor grammatical skills. People do not punctuate properly. Some use symbols instead of writing out words. There are so many atrocities and improprieties against the English language today. It is sad.

I also hate it when I get my feet wet.

5. Do you want/have kids?

I wanted kids but the universe had other plans. I have cows now instead.

6. Have you ever thought about converting your religion?

My religion has become rather eclectic with time. I don't know that it's a conversion, more a refinement of ideas.

7. Last shocking news you heard?

This is tough. I'm almost 50 - it takes a lot to shock me. I guess in the entertainment world, I was saddened (but not shocked) to hear Andy Griffith had died. I'm a big fan of Mayberry.

I am often shocked by inconsideration and rudeness. I expect people to be nice, but they aren't.

8. What was the last thing you drank?

Water. That is all I drink these days. Lots of H2O.

9. Who do you most look like in your family?

Some days I look in the mirror and see my mother. Other days I see my dad. Some days I see neither one and wonder where I came from.

10. If you could have something right now, anything, what would it be?

A million dollars. I hate to say that, as it sounds so materialistic, but in this world money is all that matters. That's the realistic side of me.

The unrealistic side of me says I would like to have a trip around the world, stopping at every major city, visiting every continent. What a site to see. Of course, that takes money, too.

I would also like a permanent rainbow just because I think they are lovely.

And if someone could give me the antidote to procrastination, that would be good.

11. Where does most of your family live?

Most live close by, or within an hour's drive. Others are in California and Texas.

12. Where did you grow up?

Right here. Well, six miles or so from here, on another farm at the foot of a mountain. A wonderful place where I could play in meadows, hide in forests, and dance with fairies when the sun went down.

13. Where do you want to go on vacation?

The Grand Canyon. But not when it is hot.

14. Have you ever had a panic attack?

Yes, I am afraid so. But it has been a long time since I've had one.

15. What can’t you wait for?

I can't wait for The Hobbit movie. It comes out in December and I am looking forward to it. If it is half as good as Lord of the Rings, it should be a great movie.

16. When was the last time you told someone you loved him or her and meant it?

This morning.

17. Have your parents ever smoked pot?

I have no idea.

18. Want someone back in your life?

Nope. Although new folks are always welcome.

19. What do you order at the bar?

I don't go to bars.

20. When was the last time you cried really, really hard?

In mid-June.

21. Ever licked someone’s cheek?

Yuck. No.

22. What is your favorite thing to eat with peanut butter?

A Ritz cracker.

23. Where were you on July 4th, 2008?

I don't know. I was either at home or at the fireworks in Fincastle, but I don't know which.

24. What are your nicknames?

My husband calls me Pookey.

25. If you could go back in time, how far back would you go?

Are we changing things, or just visiting? If we're changing things, then I would go back to the writing of the US Constitution and make provisions for all of humanity, not just rich white guys. You know, make everybody equal. Women are people, too.

If I'm just visiting, then I would like to go back to the time of Jesus, and sit at his feet, and listen. I guess I would need to learn a new language before I do that, though.

I'm pretty sure he didn't speak to the masses in English.

49 - A Very Good Year

The last several weeks have been filled with celebration, and today is no exception.

I am 49 years old today.

Almost 50. In another year, I will be an antique!

It has been an interesting life, and I look forward to many more interesting and entertaining years. Maybe even another 49. Won't I be old then?!?

Thank you, gentle reader, for sticking with this blog for however long you have been reading. I have enjoyed making friends with some of you, meeting you in person, or befriending you on Facebook. Finding common ground is always such a comfort. Connections are important and good.

You have been kind to me and I appreciate it. I hope that you stay with me as the journey continues, but if not, I understand. We are all like gentle streams, twisting, turning, sometimes meeting up, other times running parallel, sometimes moving so far away as to be in the next county. Life is like that.

Take care of yourself, dear reader. Be as kind to your body as you can - it does wear out. Be gentle with your soul, and always strive to learn something new each day. Mind expansion is a good thing. You know me - I love education.

Some days I don't think I will have anything else to say here, but I think I will hang around for at least another year. Might as well say "I'm 50" in this space when the time comes, eh?

So may this day also be special to you, just because you're the wonderful you you are.

Thanks for reading Blue Country Magic!

Down in De Feet

You might remember that last year, I had a boo-boo in my right foot that necessitated wearing a funny little shoe for 8 weeks.

The problem never resolved itself completely, and ultimately, thanks to my pal arthritis, I have been forced into changing my shoe style completely. I can hardly walk in anything but a shoe with a very sturdy, inflexible sole. Other shoes cause me a considerable amount of pain.

Women's shoes with inflexible soles are difficult to find in Roanoke. And it's hard to order them online because, well, unless something absolutely says it has an inflexible sole I have no way to know. In the shoe stores you will find me bending shoes to see if they will work for me or not.

They are also incredibly expensive, these shoes.

So I am down to three pairs of shoes. One is pair of Patagonias that are made for rock climbing. The other is a pair of black hiking sandals that I recently found at Fleet Feet. And the third pair is a New Balance tan suede shoe that I found at Bush-Flora. This shoe is made for diabetics. It has a very stiff sole.

They have a suede or nubuck finish on them. I bought them in February to use as a substitute casual dress shoe. They have also been doubling as my walking shoe until I could find some other sturdy tennis shoe.

Yesterday I met my pal Di from Blue Ridge Gal in the big city so we could have lunch. I wore these shoes.

Di looked absolutely smashing; she's been on a successful diet and she literally glittered when she walked across the parking lot to meet me.

We sat down to enjoy a wonderful salad. I also had a panini sandwich and soup; Di had a shrimp dinner of some sort. It was all very good.

We were chatting away, catching up on this and that, when suddenly I felt something hit me in the foot, and then I had a coldness at my ankle.

The person cleaning up the table behind us had an accident and somehow a big container of an oily white dressing tumbled out.

It went all over my shoe. And my pants leg. And down in my shoe into my sock.

Looking down, I could see that the entire side of my right shoe was covered in this lovely sauce.

Di, who always has her camera, took this picture
of my shoe after the sauce was removed.
Note the sauce still on the floor,
the chair, and around my other foot.
The dark stains are where the sauce covered the shoe.

My heart sank. The shoes were new; they were also extremely important to me, being one of three pairs I owned that I could actually walk in.

Anyone who has ever owned suede knows how difficult it is to clean. And once soiled, it is never the same.

The staff was very apologetic; the waitress cleaned the sauce from my shoe. She called for a manager. He came over and I explained that my shoes were ruined.

He said he would be back. When he returned, he gave me his card and said I should take the shoes to the dry cleaners. If that didn't work, they would pay to replace them.

I told him I knew that the dry cleaners wouldn't be able to clean them, and I would most likely have to have them replaced. We had some discussion as I was concerned about the expense and inconvenience of this.

Finally he wrote a note on his card, noting the date and the damaged shoes.

He also gave us our meals free.

I called my husband and he said I should try to take care of it right away. "That guy might not be there tomorrow," he said. And then I would be out the cost of a pair of expensive shoes.

Cell phones are wonderful things. Before I did anything hasty, I called the dry cleaner I use. They did not clean suede shoes. Neither did the others I called, nor did they know of anyone who did.

I then went to the shoe store at Towers where I purchased the shoes originally. They also repair shoes. They looked at the soiled leather and told me they could do nothing for them. They confirmed they were ruined.

They also said they could not replace them. According to them, New Balance no longer makes that particular shoe. The shoe style that will replace them was not in stock and won't be in until some time in May.

I feared that if I waited, the restaurant might not make good on its promise to compensate me for the damaged shoes. So I went ahead and pre-purchased the shoes that were on order. They will also be a diabetic shoe, only in black, since the tan is no longer available. I can only hope they will fit and meet my needs.

Then I took the receipt back to the restaurant. The manager was not happy to see me, I think, but he did reimburse me.

Hopefully my new shoes will arrive soon so I will have something to wear.

In the meantime, my old shoes reek of garlic and smell like a salad. I am trying to figure out how to clean them so I can use them around the farm. They will be the most expensive pair of farm shoes I've ever had.

Hard to Believe

I have apparently run out of things to say.

Forecasting Snow

Snow in 2009

The weatherman is calling for snow later in the week.

We had our first snow early, in late October.

My ideal snow would come late on December 24 and melt by 1 p.m. on December 25. However, I doubt that happens.

Have you found your snow boots, coat, hat, and gloves? I'll be looking for mine!

Gee, Somebody Likes Me

It has been a while since I've received a blogger award. I've been blogging since 2006 and I confess I don't get out to visit other blogs as much as I would like these days. If you comment on my blog I always try to return the visit, though. I know there are folks who visit hundreds of blogs every week and I admire them for that.
Anyway, Gone Country over at the blog From City Streets to Country Roads very kindly gave me the Versatile Blogger Award the other day. I am very glad she enjoys my blog and I want to thank her and all of my readers for taking a little time out of their day to see what I have to say.
These things generally come with a little hook and something to do, and I am going to break the chain here and not list them. I will list some blogs that I enjoy reading and if they want this award, or if you are blogger and you would like this award, then here it is. Personally, I think if you blog you deserve it just for being you.
So here is a shout-out to some blogs you might enjoy!
Autumn Sky Ranch (a brand-new blog!)
Greener Pastures - A City Girl Goes Country (Deb, you need to write more!)
Happy reading!

Ch..ch..changes

So, Facebook has made changes to its newsfeed.

Blogger made changes to its dashboard and the way it posts, which I just this weekend decided to look at it.

It's one thing when you make changes yourself, it is quite another to have them thrust upon you so that you're forced to deal with them.

And these are very minor things, really, in the grand scheme of life.

I mean, life is all about change.

You change your clothes.
You change your mind.
You change your lifestyle.
You change jobs.
You change your brand of cereal.
You change your diet.
You change your shoes.
You change the color of the paint on the walls.
You change your decor all around.
You change your locale if you move.
You change jobs.
You change friends.
You change.

You get the idea. Change is the one constant in the world. It's always out there. The trees are growing, the rain falls or the sun shines. Every day, every minute, every second - it's all about change. Every spin of the earth brings about change, good or bad. Every action has a reaction - you can't stop it.

So there is no arguing against change. It's a-coming whether you want it not. The questions then, are two: What kind of change? And how will you handle it?

Change can only be three things: good, bad or so little that you barely notice it and it is therefore negligible. You can deal with it in a million ways, but essentially it boils down to you handle it well or you don't.

I have been trying to make positive changes in my life of late. In the last year, I've made these positive changes:

returned back to college.
started a diet.
increased my exercise.
returned to playing the guitar.
returned to journaling in a notebook.
looked up some old friends.
learned how to use the digital video camera.
visited a doctor and took care of health issue.

These are all good things. I hope that you have added some good things to your life in the last year, too. It's important to stop, revisit the list, and pat yourself on the back for the achievements every once in a while.

Change is not all bad. So I wish for you today that good changes come your way.

On My Mind

Recently, I tried a new Hershey's Air Delight Aerated Milk Chocolate bar. Half of it went into my trash can, if that tells you anything. This is not something I want to eat. Obviously, Hershey's is now trying to mix in air bubbles with chocolate in order to bulk up a product, sell us the very air we breathe, and maximize profits.

Leave this on the shelf, please. Let's not encourage this kind of corporate maneuverings, particularly with something that barely passes as chocolate.

Am I the only person on the planet who wasn't all that thrilled with the last Harry Potter movie?

***

We read Genesis in my Politics in Literature class, along with a few other parts of the Bible, and I am still left with the question I always have when I read that biblical book. Where did the wife of Cain come from? How can this very important question simply be glossed over for thousands of years?

***

My brother has lost more than 100 pounds of weight in the last year and a half. He doesn't know it, but he has inspired me.

What is with the fascination with things swamp on History and Discovery? We have Swamp Loggers, Swamp People, and Swamp Brothers. Have you seen any of these shows?

And last, but not least, why do people think emails must be forwarded? This has become such a problem that I refuse to discuss anything of importance by email anymore. I pick up the phone and call. It's a lot less traceable.

Removing the Clutter

After I returned to school, I found that the space that I use for my official business office became the catch-all for magazines, newspapers, and other items. They began piling up in February and then they multiplied and had babies for the next 12 weeks.

Yesterday, I could bear it no more. I began tossing things and straightening up. If I tossed out anything less than 50 pounds of magazines and paper, all headed for the recycling bin, I would be surprised.

I found no great mysteries lurking beneath the piles, but did manage to locate the top of my desk. This is what it looked like after I was done.

Maybe not a great change from where you sit, but I assure you, it is!

Still Here

Can you believe it?

I don't have anything to say!
