I have been pondering the use of AI in writing. It's here, and it's going to stay. There are some authors who firmly oppose it, others who are using it to write practically everything. I've dabbled with it, but I am not sure where I stand.
So here are some pros and cons:

Concern about losing originality and personal voice.

Thursday Thirteen is played by lots of people; there is a list here if you want to read other Thursday Thirteens and/or play along. I've been playing for a while, and this is my 900th time to do a list of 13 on a Thursday. Or so sayth the Blogger counter, anyway.
I find myself embracing it for help with generating more dynamic lesson plans. Some old lessons have been given new life!
ReplyDeleteMy main issue with AI is the depletion of natural resources. The server farms that house the thing need so much electricity to power it, and that's wasting resources that could be used on something more useful. That, and we know that to train the thing they have stolen works of human writers. I probably wouldn't be so angry about it if they had paid the writers, but no. It's too expensive to pay people for training the thing, and now they want to make money off of that stolen work?
ReplyDeleteI'm of the latter camp. At least one of my books has been stolen by Meta in their AI "training" grab that's so controversial right now. The Atlantic is investigating the situation, too. It's bad enough that every one of my books has been pirated. It's super hard for authors these days, and AI is a big part of it. Not only does it give AI users the advantage of "writing" and publishing at insane rates, it often steals from others' work.
ReplyDeleteAI was just taking off two years ago when I hung up my professional writer spurs. I would use it like I used Grammarly, to catch typos. I'd use it to quickly compile research (but I'd confirm anything I used). But I would never use it to actually write. We're in a dicey area here. I charged clients for my work. My. Work. How could I charge them for chatgpt? It's unethical.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this. I have one writer friend who told me she hadn't written anything herself in the last year, she's using AI and selling it as her work. I don't think that's appropriate. It's one thing to run up a list like this one for my blog, which pays nothing, and another to *sell* something as "my work" if an AI writes it. I've attempted to use AI for research, and it came up with so much BS that I've not used it again for anything for which I am being paid. (It made-up quotes from people in a university that doesn't exist.)
DeleteI don't want to use AI to write but it comes up when a google first thing. I look at it a bit like Wikipedia a place to start and then verify.
