Vultures

Little black specs in the air.

Flying, circling.

Do I need to check the cows? No, they are on the other side of the farm.

But this is the dance of the dead things.

The waltz of the meat eaters as they smell out the carrion.

A dead deer along the road, not hit by a car but shot, we find.

Left for the vultures to take what they may.

Leaving us to watch the specs in the sky.

  1. So people just drive by and take pot shots at living things? That's sick. How disgusting. Much more disgusting than vultures, who perform a necessary service, and look rather beautiful soaring into such a gorgeously blue sky.

  2. You might find it interesting that a couple of weeks ago, we watched an annual event. The gathering of the vultures as they prepare to head south for the winter. It is called kettling. One evening there might be 6 or 7. Next evening, just before dusk, one would see 10 or 12. In a few days, there will be a large group, they will gracefully dance together in the evening sky, finding a place to congregate for the evening, and before you know it, they will be gone. Their flight is much more graceful looking than their name, turkey buzzard! And yes, what a great work they perform. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

  3. That's a LOT of vultures circling about. I'd much rather watch a hawk or an eagle in flight.

  4. I'm not happy about someone shooting a deer and just leaving it. I guess it is a good thing we have buzzards or we would be knee deep in road kill. Well, that's not a pretty picture...
