Thursday Thirteen is played by lots of people; there is a list here.
I've been playing for a while and this is my 230th time to do a list of 13 on a
Thursday.
Great post. It reminds us that rights were won by people who went out and protested. I've been watching a series about the fight against apartheid in South Africa as well, and that revealed how large a part was played by worldwide protest against the regime. Governments and corporations all supported it, but the level of protest forced them to reconsider out of self interest. Mrs Thatcher, for instance, though friendly to the regime, could not take the political risk of being photographed shaking P.W. Botha's hand on a state visit. The protestors were winning. So how come people don't protest now? We all saw how the Occupy protests were portrayed as suspect by the mainstream media, who attempted to demonise and marginalise the protestors. Only their courage and persistence forced some journalists to re-align. An essential and effective democratic right has been removed from us, probably because it was effective, and so it is not in the establishment's interest to portray it positively. Sadly, the establishment now includes the media. But it seems the spirit of those suffragettes might not be entirely lost - perhaps more and more people will come out in their support.
The media sell-out is a big part of the problem. When they report a protest of over 1000 at the Virginia state capitol as a "few hundred," people tend not to see the impact of what is happening.
Great post. It's cool to see my sisters standing up for one another. By the way, Ann Curtis answered your question. You can check it out at--http://otherworlddiner.blogspot.com/2012/02/thirteen-questions-editors-answers.html Thanks.
Gave me chills. I can't believe the recent proposals coming from the Republicans. Rick Santorum is like the U.S. version of Iran's religious hard liner. The don't want to regulate banks or corporations but want to regulate me and my body!
Excellent post, Anita! This post by a local blogger made me think of you and some of your posts from this week. : )
ReplyDeleteIt has been a tough week for civil rights.

DeleteWhat a great collection of photos.
ReplyDeleteMy hats off to the first women to put themselves out there.
Happy T13!
Makes you wonder when the GOP will give it up and just let us have our rights. Stupid old white men in politics... lets just vote the bastards out!
ReplyDeleteWonderful post! Blogs (like this!) and other forms of social media will get the word out where the conventional media fails.

ReplyDeleteAmen. Some people will just never get it.

ReplyDeleteIt has long amazed me that any woman would support the Republican party. Still does.
