  3. Ah - but consider who is included in the voters who are the bosses. There are Creationists who rely on the bible (but mostly the Old Testament bible, nothing that might suggest social responsibility and communal care for one another) for their understanding and don't want anything to do with the modern world. The voters include people who hate people who look or behave differently. Immigrants are loathesome to them. So are "communist" ideas like multiculturalism and a national health service. They include people who hate taxes and think no one should have to pay them. They respect wealth because - well God must have blessed the rich, so they must deserve their wealth, so they shouldn't have to pay anything in taxes either. And anyway, they want to be just as rich, which is the only way they can imagine being really happy and empowered and free. They include people for whom their guns are central to their feeling of autonomy - no little bell goes off when someone commits an atrocity. Their reaction is that there should be more guns out there instead. They include people (like the ones driving the current crisis) who want to destroy modern, social democratic America post Rooseveldt and the Great Society and bring back the America they can understand - small state america where everyone had a gun and took care of number one and shooting redskins was allowed. That's what these people want.

Maybe its the bosses, the voters who elected them, who are at fault too.

  4. Wow Briar, that was good. You described that perfectly. And because the government has run amok with wasting money and government workers not doing their jobs, rational people have been easily swayed to the cries of these mean, selfish nuts you described. I have friends who forward me e-mails against the immigrants and demanding we keep "God" on our money and kick those lazy people off welfare, stuff like that, and they are good people who haven't thought it through, whose minds I sometimes can change a bit, when I explain to them how they've been manipulated. Small state America where everyone had a gun and shooting redskins was allowed--that's an excellent image of what the whackos want.

  5. The Republicans seem to have employed a factory full of people to churn out those awful emails. I have seen some. They blatantly employ emotional manipulation ("because your voted for that Obama guy, we your grandparents have had to sack our staff and now won't send you a cheque - you stupid hippie grand-daughter" was the gist of one) and have the most simplistic view of how the world works imaginable. They're so patronising too - they seem to judge their recipients as extremely stupid. How can people be taken in by such propaganda? How can they not feel insulted to have been deemed likely to believe them?

  6. Well Briar, I'm tired of trying to be nice about it. They ARE stupid. They believe this propaganda. Maybe they are primed for it because they just can't swallow the fact that we have a black man for a president--he's just too different from them. Maybe they just don't have the time to read and decipher because they are working their balls off trying to put food on the table. They're an easy mark. And the Republicans got a good campaign going--rile them up where their hearts are--religion and patriotism. How can you go against religion and patriotism? They've got these people believing socialism is communism. They don't even know what it is. They've got people thinking "liberal" is a dirty word. Which is ironic because Jesus was as liberal as they come. The corporations have done a wonderful job on this campaign. People are actually voting against themselves. If that is not dumb, I don't know what is.
