Creeping Close to the Crane

Saturday I spied a new bird over at the pond. We have always called this bird a crane.

In all my years of taking pictures, I had never been able to get close enough to a bird like this to take a decent photo.

I crept as close I dared and was rewarded.

I was not able to find a picture of this exact bird in my Audubon field guide. I still think it is a crane of some kind but I suppose it could also be a heron. Anyone have a positive ID?

  1. We have a guy like that who hangs out occasionally in our pond or along the stream. Your photos are amazing.

Growing up in the boondocks, we would call them blue "herrings," in our Okie dialect. Now I call them blue herons, but don't know if that is right or not.

  2. It looks like the blue heron I sometimes see in Salem by the Roanoke River. I haven't seen her this year so thought she was sitting on a nest somewhere. Quite regal!

  3. We used to have a blue heron like that... we called him Henry. He used to love to sit on our pier when we lived on the Okanagan Lake.

  4. I'm with the blue heron people as well. I'm quite jealous of your photographic abilities, and the wildlife around your home.

  5. I saw a bird like that several years ago, but haven't seen him since. Very good pictures.

  6. I saw the heron this morning by the Roanoke River in Salem...he looks like the same one. I didn't have my camera so took a phone pic but he's too small to appreciate.

  7. I know this is an old post but thought I'd add my agreement to those who say this is a blue heron. I live near Charleston, SC on the coast and we see them frequently. I also found this audobon project site you may find interesting. http://varookery.audubon.org/

I stumbled across your site because a search for something completely different included an image of artwork at what looked like a craft tent and I was curious because I am trying to get started in festivals and such myself with my artwork.
