Bear Cubs

I am posting this because I daresay none of us seeing this picture will ever see bear cubs this young again.

This is my brother's snapshot. He still lives on the farm where I grew up, and Saturday some of his friends and their dogs went rabbit hunting.

During the course of their hunt, the dogs and men came across a bear. The bear attacked and the men killed it in self-defense.

They found these three small cubs.

The game warden ruled the kill as in self-defense and took the cubs to Virginia Tech.

The mama bear of course was only defending her tiny little babies. My brother said they weighed about four pounds and the game warden said they were maybe two weeks old.

I feel very bad for the bear and for the cubs. People need to be more careful when they are out in the woods. The bear, after all, was there first.

  1. They are so cute. I'm glad they found the cubs and took them to the authorities. I hope they will be able to save them.

  2. Oh, that just breaks my heart. I agree with you, the mama bear was in the right in this situation.

  3. Wonder if it was the bear you saw in the field some months ago. I didn't realize that cubs are born this early in the year. They will miss their mama, but the humans would have been missing their loved ones had the mama not been shot. It's a sad story either way, but so wonderul that the cubs were found and saved. YAY, Virginia Tech!

  4. AWE!! I love them! Hopefully they will be be ok!!! Poor babies! I always love seeing the bears at the Cove and I'm sure there will need to be a bit more caution since we have had such a bad winter.

  6. It is sad..I would have attacked if anyone came close to my babies and Momma did what any human would do. I don't know how this could have turned out differently, but I hope these babies won't be raised and then hunted for sport.

  7. Hi, I am Snappy Di's friend and she sent me your blog. It is a very sad thing with our animals who have to be shot. They were here first. The cubs are beautiful little guys and hope they will find a happy home. We had a bear in our lane that chased a lady and was tranquilized, then later euthanized. It was quite a debate here whether they should have taken those drastic measures. We live in the mountains and respect the wildlife up here. It's a difficult subject to debate. Debrasuej

  8. A sad situation, for sure, but it sounds like your brother's friends did what they had to do. And they did the right thing by calling the game warden. I'm sure the babies will be well taken care of at Virginia Tech.

  9. I grew up in the country, and while I don't object to all hunting, I will say that there's a time and place for everything. I hope the cubs survive, and I am indeed grateful that your brother's friends survived.

  10. Aw! Wow, lucky they found the cubs. That is so sad that they had to shoot the mother. Poor thing. I hate that sometimes animals have to be killed. Just makes me so sad.
