Fried Green Tomatoes

Saturday I decided it was time for fried green tomatoes.

My husband doesn't care for them, but he was working and so I had only my self to please.

I thought I'd fry up a zucchini, too, while I was at it.

Normally I do not eat fried food. I cook in a little olive oil from time to time but otherwise had nothing in the house for a big batch of fried 'maters. I bought some Smart Balance oil that was supposed to be heart healthy, although I have my doubts as to the healthiness of cooking oil in all shapes and forms.

Those tomatoes and the one zucchini made up a great big plate full of veggies.

I had purchased batter for onion rings, but didn't care much for it on the first batch. So I added flour and milk and an egg to what I had and went from there.

I liked that better.

It took me almost an hour to get the tomatoes and the zucchini fried.

Yum.

  1. When I saw the post title on my feed list I drooled and was all excited thinking I was going to find out a restaurant in the area that serves them...good ones. Alas, you made them at home :-( They look yummy and now I want to have some all the more! Do you know anywhere to get them?

  2. My mouth is watering! I love fried battered food in all forms, but it is a real treat. I have never had fried green tomatoes, but I loved the movie! I grew up eating fried zucchini, fried eggplant, fried okra, fried anything else that stood still long enough. Throw on some gravy and add some biscuits. Maybe I should make the kids some fried squash this week. The okra is starting to get ripe. Doesn't it take forever to fry stuff? But looking at that picture makes me want to sit down and eat the whole plate full!

  5. My mother has been trying to get me to make fried green tomatoes for years, since she saw the movie. Haven't tried it yet but I will. Fried zucchini in olive oil with garlic is heavenly.

I'm very pro frying. Is that politically incorrect nowadays? lol

  6. Ah, you teased us with all the build up... but how did they taste? Worth the work?

This reminded me of my grandmother, who often fixed fried green tomatoes. I'm not a fan, but I enjoyed the process, the cooking, and other's enjoyment.

  7. Lord have mercy--you done set my mouth to waterin'! Definitely one of the most delightful things about summer--vegetables fresh from the garden. Our corn has finally come in...and I can't wait!

  9. Tom - they were delicious!

Deb - I stopped eating fried foods for health reasons, but I think it's ok to indulge occasionally. I have no idea about the "PC"-ness of it, though.

Amy - Frying green tomatoes is just like frying zucchini - only you do it with tomatoes. Just dip them in batter and put them in oil and when they're golden brown they're ready to eat.
